What is my luggage allowance? Up

The policy of hand luggage and checked luggage depends on the airline operating your flight. It might occur that some companies, which are associated with Spanair, use other prices than the ones published at Spanair. Before leaving, please contact your travel agent or the airline operating your flight to get more details about their luggage policy.

Domestic and international flights operated by Spanair have a maximum free luggage allowance that varies depending on your class. Some international destinations limit your free luggage allowance by weight or by number of pieces. This will always be indicated on the ticket. Regardless of the allowance, the maximum weight allowed for any single checked bag is 32 kg and no single bag should exceed this weight. If one single bag weighs more than 32 kg it will need to be sent as cargo or the content will have to be shared out into one or two bags weighing less than this limit.

1.-Spanair luggage allowance

Domestic and European flights and flights to Banjul
Business or Avant class: 30 kg
Economy or Economy+ class: 20 kg
Infants: 10 kg + 1 folding pram/pushchair

Flights to Algiers
Business or Avant class: 40 kg
Economy or Economy+ class: 30 kg
Infants: 10 kg + 1 folding pram/pushchair

Hand luggage
One piece of hand luggage is allowed with measurements not exceeding 50x40x25 cm (the total of the three dimensions cannot exceed 115cm) and a maximum weight of 6 kg.

2.- Increased luggage allowance for Spanair Plus members
Spanair Gold Plus: 20 kg
Spanair Silver Plus: 20 kg

3.- Allowance for flights in codeshare with other companies
If your journey includes a connection and you have purchased tickets separately from different airlines, the luggage allowance per individual journey will be in accordance with the regulations of each carrier. If you have a single connecting ticket the allowance will be that agreed between both companies and appearing on your ticket. Generally, on international flights the luggage allowance will be that of the company operating the longer leg and on domestic flights the airline operating the first leg.

4.- Allowance for flights to the US and Canada
You can carry two bags with a maximum weight of 23 kg each (regardless of the class selected). Infants have a maximum luggage allowance of 1 piece weighing up to 23 kg.

Hand luggage
One piece of hand luggage is allowed with measurements not exceeding 50x40x25 cm (the total of the three dimensions cannot exceed 115cm) and a maximum weight of 8 kg, plus one personal article.

1. Contact Spanair Center if you want to travel with a dog or cat. You must call us after 48 hours to confirm that your pet has been accepted on the flight.

Spanair offers you a pet carrier hire service. More information

Please note that only a limited number of animals will be permitted on board depending on the type of aircraft.

2. Pet carriers can be booked up to 48 hours prior to the flight's departure on the mainland, 72 hours on the Balearic Islands and 69 hours on the Canary Islands.

Regular Vari Kennel 68 x 50 x 48cm. Cocker Spaniel, Beagle, Miniature Schnauzer.
Pouch for pets in the cabin * 50 x 30 x 22cm. Pets weighing no more than 5kg.

* Models admitted inside aircraft cabins. These models are not for hire, for sale only. Each pet carrier comes with a travel kit that includes an absorbent, hygienic blanket and a 1 kg bowl of Hill's Science Plan dry dog food. For long stays, you can book the pet carrier for different dates. You do not have to keep it for the entire duration of your stay.

After each use, the pet carriers go through three stages of cleaning:
Stage I: Soaping and exterior brushing. The carrier is cleaned with anti-parasitic soap and brushed to kill any parasites that may have come from the last animal to use it.

Stage II: Rinse and disinfection. The soap is removed by rinsing with hot (70º), high pressure and osmotised water. Once the carrier is dry, it is sprayed with quaternary ammonium, a bactericide, fungicide and virucide with high cleansing and disinfectant power. It is harmless to the pet and prevents any germs being harboured in the carrier.

Stage III: Revision and certification. If all procedures have been followed correctly, the carrier is sealed and the corresponding health certificate issued showing when it was disinfected and the spectrum of disinfection.

NB:  Pet carriers cannot be booked for international flights.

3. In the cabin: Your pet must travel in a waterproof pouch/carrier suitable for air travel. The pet and container together must not weigh more than 6 kg and the dimensions of the container must not exceed 50x40x25 cm. This rule does not apply to guide dogs.

4. In the hold: Your pet must travel in an approved metal or plastic container (cage/pet carrier) that is well-ventilated and large enough for the animal can stand, but without allowing it to stick its head out. Please note that the carrier measurements must not exceed 125x65x85 cm.

5. Your pet must be correctly identified and have a valid vaccination record.

You must bring:
- All the required information on the health of the animal, including the vaccination record.
- The animal must be identifiable by means of an electronic chip or a readable tattoo.
- If you are travelling within the EU, you must have a European passport issued by a veterinarian designated by the competent authority containing the relative vaccination details and the medical history of the animal. It must also contain details of a valid rabies vaccination. For this reason pets under three months old cannot travel to other EU countries. Be aware that a number of EU countries require animals to have been treated for parasites and ticks. Generally, for international flights you must take into account the specific requirements each country may request to allow pets to enter. We recommend that you consult a veterinarian and the consulate of the destination country for the rules concerning required health certificates and customs regulations.

6. Complete the form given to you at the check-in desk.

7. Charges to be paid during check-in depend on whether your pet is travelling inside the cabin or in the hold. More information

8. Contact the Spanair Cargo department regarding carriage of any animal other than a dog or cat.

NB: According to the flight duration, we recommend that you do not to give your pet food or water for 4 hours before short flights (2-4 hours) and 8 hours before long flights (5-9 hours). This prevents the animal needing to pass stools or vomit from sickness inside the carrier and experience discomfort during the rest of the journey.

PRM travel information Up

Here we provide general information that you may need to consider when travelling by aeroplane:

1. Make sure you have all the required information before finalising your travel arrangements.

2. Assess your individual needs, particularly if you cannot walk for long distances without assistance. There may be long distances between check-in counters and boarding gates.

3. Contact members of our staff to ensure that they are aware of and understand your particular needs.

4. Do not take it for granted that you will find assistance. It is better to request assistance in advance.

5. Do not expect crew members to know the best way to lift or transfer you. Inform the crew when you need assistance.

Spanair S.A takes responsibility for you as a passenger. We both must cooperate so that your journey is as comfortable and incident-free as possible.

International agreements state that compensation for loss or damage of personal luggage (including wheelchairs) will be calculated by the weight, not value. Before travelling, make sure that your travel insurance covers mobility equipment. You may need an additional cover. Spanair offers you accident insurance and travel insurance from less than 2 euros per day. More information

NB: European Regulation 1107/2006 states that if you require special PRM assistance, you must be at one of the specific collection points 2 hours prior to the flight’s departure. These are specified for Spanish airports at www.aena.es.

Restrictions: There is a series of restrictions affecting PRM. Restrictions are placed on the maximum number of PRM on board a flight for safety reasons. These restrictions affect the number of accompanying persons required to provide assistance depending on the passenger’s disability. In both cases the restrictions guarantee the correct safety measures can be taken in the event of evacuation of the aircraft.

If you have any queries concerning these restrictions, please contact Spanair Center or send an e-mail to special@spanair.es.
