Bringing food products into the EU

Owing to the risk of importing disease into the European Union, it is forbidden to bring meat, meat products, milk and dairy products into the EU, with the exception of:

• Powdered milk and food for infants, and special food required for medical reasons provided that the product does not require refrigeration before opening and it is a commercial brand product with the packaging still intact.
• Personal packages containing meat, meat products, milk and dairy products through specifically-designated EU entry points, provided they have obtained the necessary documentation from the official veterinary services of the country of origin. The goods must be declared and the corresponding documentation must be presented on arrival at the EU border control for veterinary control.
• In all other cases these products must be handed over when crossing EU borders to be destroyed.

Can I send special luggage as air cargo?

Yes, you can send sport gear or any other type of luggage or goods as air cargo through Spanair Cargo. To request this service, please contact us at least 72 hours before the departure of your flight by calling: (+34) 902 117 680

Can I travel with a weapon?

Yes, but the carrying of weapons or any object that can be used as a weapon on board is not permitted. Weapons may only be carried in the hold. Under no circumstances are weapons allowed to be carried as hand luggage. They must be checked in and comply with a series of requirements set by the airport’s Weapon Control service.

Steps to be followed for carriage of weapons:

Step 1. Weapon Control
Go to Weapon Control with your National Identity card or passport, firearms licence, weapon ownership registration document, flight ticket and European firearms pass (EU countries) and fill in form 790 for the authorisation of transporting weapons. We recommend that you should have the following documentation depending on your destination:

Destination in Spain                     EU destination                      International destination

DNI card or passport
Firearms licence
Weapon ownership registration
Flight ticket

National ID card or passport
Firearms licence
Weapon ownership registration
Flight ticket
European firearms pass

Consult the consulate or embassy of the

destination country regarding local

legislation for the possession, use

and circulation of weapons.

Step 2. Payment of Weapon Control service fee
The fee (€3.32) can be paid by either of the following two methods:
• payment of the fee at any bank, including any branches located in the airport terminal
• direct payment of the fee at the airports Weapon Control counter

Step 3. Check-in
Go to the check-in desk with the stamped 790 form, the weapon correctly stored in its case and the ammunition in another rigid, separate case and check the weapon in together with your other luggage.
The weapon should be checked in by its owner, and the corresponding licence or authorisation for its use presented at the airport Weapon Control service.

If the person checking in the weapon is not the owner, he/she must have an authorisation for firearm use or licence together with the authorisation of the owner to check the weapon in. The luggage check-in receipt will be handed to the applicant. Together with the authorisation issued by the Weapons Control, this will allow the weapon in question be collected at the destination airport.

Step 4. Civil Guard Inspection and loading
Check-in staff will take charge of transferring the weapon and the ammunition for inspection by the Civil Guard. Once inspected, the weapon and the ammunition will be duly sealed. The Spanair ground crew will load the crates containing weapons or dangerous objects into the hold and notify the Captain of the aircraft of their presence.

Step 5. Unloading and collection of the weapon
At the destination airport (Spanish airport), the ground crew will unload the boxes or cases containing the weapons and will hand them over to Weapon Control. You must collect the weapon from the airport Weapon Control services and present the stamped 790 receipt, a copy of which will be saved for filing. You may collect the box or container with your weapon on signing a delivery document.

European regulation on hand luggage and security

As of November 2006 an expansion of EU Regulation 622/2003 was applied establishing new measures on Civil Aviation security following the EU guidelines. These measures have been applied since the effective date in all EU airports and those in Norway, Switzerland and Iceland. The objective of these new measures is to protect the passenger from liquid explosive threats. The following are considered liquids:

• Water and other drinks, soup and syrups
• Perfume
• Gels and shampoo
• Aerosols
• Creams, lotions, oils, toothpaste
• Shaving cream, other foams and deodorants
• Other items of a similar consistency

Packaging
Containers holding liquids must not exceed 100ml each. They must be carried in a clear, re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of 1 litre.

Exceptions allowed in the cabin
• Medication or dietary requirements, including baby food. The passenger must be able to confirm the authenticity of the authorised liquid.
• Liquids purchased at points of sale after security screening. Normally these points of sale will pack your purchases in sealed, tamper-proof bags.
• Liquids purchased in an EU airport, packed in a sealed, tamper-proof bag offering proof that the item was purchased at that airport and on that day.
• Liquids purchased on board an aircraft of an EU carrier packed in a sealed, tamper-proof bag offering proof that the item was purchased on that aircraft and on that day.

Procedures to be carried out in the event of you bringing liquids subject to this regulation
• The bag will be presented at the security x-ray points to be scanned and examined, separate from hand luggage.
• Sealed bags from the previously mentioned points of sale should not be opened until you reach your final destination.

Other measures applicable to this regulation affecting airport security
Laptops and other large electrical items are to be removed from hand luggage, they must be removed from their case or cover for separate checking and scanning. Passengers' coats, jackets and other similar items will be scanned as separate pieces of hand luggage.

Further information on this regulation will be displayed for passengers' information around the airport.

What happens if my connecting flights are operated by different airlines?

Luggage can be checked through to the final destination depending on Spanair’s codeshare agreements with other airlines. This will appear on your ticket. We currently have a special agreement with Star Alliance and intercarrier agreements with most airlines.

For further information, ask in Spanair sales offices or the staff at the check-in desks.

What is my luggage allowance?

The policy of hand luggage and checked luggage depends on the airline operating your flight. It might occur that some companies, which are associated with Spanair, use other prices than the ones published at Spanair. Before leaving, please contact your travel agent or the airline operating your flight to get more details about their luggage policy.

Domestic and international flights operated by Spanair have a maximum free luggage allowance that varies depending on your class. Some international destinations limit your free luggage allowance by weight or by number of pieces. This will always be indicated on the ticket. Regardless of the allowance, the maximum weight allowed for any single checked bag is 32 kg and no single bag should exceed this weight. If one single bag weighs more than 32 kg it will need to be sent as cargo or the content will have to be shared out into one or two bags weighing less than this limit.

3.- Allowance for flights in codeshare with other companies
If your journey includes a connection and you have purchased tickets separately from different airlines, the luggage allowance per individual journey will be in accordance with the regulations of each carrier. If you have a single connecting ticket the allowance will be that agreed between both companies and appearing on your ticket. Generally, on international flights the luggage allowance will be that of the company operating the longer leg and on domestic flights the airline operating the first leg.

4.- Allowance for flights to the US and Canada
You can carry two bags with a maximum weight of 23 kg each (regardless of the class selected). Infants have a maximum luggage allowance of 1 piece weighing up to 23 kg.

What should I do if my luggage is lost or damaged?

If Spanair misplaces or loses your luggage, please:

1. Inform the staff before leaving the arrivals hall.

2. Complete a claim form at the Spanair desk or our online claim form. Lost or damaged luggage claims must be made on arrival so that the agent can check the accuracy of the claim.

3. Keep the original:
• Ticket
• Luggage check-in tag
• Boarding card

Our Luggage Handling Centre will do their best to solve your problem as soon as possible. Spanair has an online application that will enable you to track your luggage at all times. Access our luggage tracking service here.

What should I take into account when packing?

All luggage you check-in will be weighed and transferred to the hold of the aircraft. Suitcases should be rigid and resistant enough to be safely transported. Spanair will not accept fragile luggage that is not suitably packaged and which compromises the safety of the aircraft or the state of luggage stowed nearby.

The maximum weight permitted per piece of luggage is 32 kg. Regardless of the allowance, any single checked item of luggage must not weigh more than 32 kg. If it exceeds this weight, it must be sent as cargo or the contents will have to be shared out into one or two bags weighing less than this limit.

Please take note of the following recommendations:

• Luggage labelling: correctly label your luggage with your personal details. We will label it with the itinerary, flight code and number. We will provide you with a copy of your luggage identification together with your boarding card. Keep your receipt until the end of your journey for use in locating your luggage in the event of a loss.
• Remove old flight labels
• Ensure your luggage is securely locked
• Inform us at least 48 hours before your flight if you plan to travel with animals, sport or medical equipment, or weapons, and of any fragile or valuable objects you may be carrying.
