Spanair opens route between the Bilbao and Munich

Today’s celebrations will involve key figures from the world of aviation, culture and sport who have close links with both cities.

Bilbao, the 10th of May 2007

Bilbao will today play host to numerous events to celebrate the launch of the Spanair route linking the Biscayan and Bavarian capitals, which was inaugurated on the 15th of April.

The day will commence with the arrival at Bilbao airport of the “inaugural flight” from Munich, transporting members of the German press invited to the event. On landing, the aeroplane will be baptised in the presence of aviation and tourism authorities.

In the afternoon, German and Spanish culture, aviation and business personalities will present the event to the press and other invitees. As a symbol of the fraternity between the two cities, Athletic de Bilbao players Isma Urzaiz and Etxebe will then present awards to the former Bayern Munich player, Gerd Müller, and ex-Athletic de Bilbao player, Dani, as well as to business people representing German brands prominent in Bilbao and in Spain as a whole.

Spanair is increasing its direct flights between Spain and Germany with the launch of the Bilbao-Munich route, which features daily flights both ways. The company will also operate two daily Barcelona-Munich flights.

The carrier is advancing its international expansion plan with the commencement of these new operations. The new flights will facilitate numerous connections with the company’s extensive domestic network, as well as with many German cities and other international destinations via Star Alliance member carriers, such as Lufthansa, Austrian and Swiss, with whom Spanair collaborates closely, thereby ensuring a high-quality service.

“The incorporation of these new flights strengthens Spanair’s position in the German market, in which the company already operates very consolidated routes, such as those between Madrid and Frankfurt, and Valencia and Munich, and the route inaugurated last October between Madrid and Stuttgart”, stated Lars Nygaard, Managing Director of Spanair. “With the launch of the Bilbao-Munich route, Spanair is also seeking to reinforce its presence in the Basque Country and its links there. We have been most pleased with the response to the new route and we fully expect to contribute to the development of Bilbao airport by meeting passenger needs and offering high quality services at competitive prices”, he added.
